The University of Edinburgh

We worked in partnership with the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) on a project to refurbish 1,400 exam desks. The desks, which were previously at the end of their usable life, were restored sympathetically to maintain their original character while ensuring their durability for future generations of students. The process involved a straightforward refurbishment: stripping old paint, applying new coats, and sanding and varnishing the desktops.

This initiative aimed not only to provide a sustainable furniture solution for the university but also to deliver significant social, environmental, and economic benefits.

Key Highlights
  • Social value: The project is estimated to contribute approximately 8,500 social value hours, providing individuals within the SPS with valuable skills and work experience.
  • Environmental impact: By refurbishing the existing desks, the project is expected to achieve a carbon saving of approximately 8,000 kgCO2e, significantly reducing the environmental footprint.
  • Sustainable partnership: This collaboration between Recycle Scotland, the University of Edinburgh, and the SPS showcases the power of cross-sector partnerships in driving sustainable solutions, providing both economic and social benefits, and promoting circular economy practices.

Outcome

Once completed, this project will ensure that thousands of students at the University of Edinburgh can continue using these high-quality, refurbished desks for decades to come, while also contributing to a more sustainable and socially responsible future.
